Winter in San Diego
Hint–Spring Starts in January!
By Connie Goldin, MA, MFT
January started with a big, exciting job for Mom to Madre. We were delighted to have been chosen to present two ninety-minute workshops for families at the California Head Start 2013 Annual Conference, in San Diego, February 4th-8th. Mom to Madre volunteer, Donna Reed-Grout MA, donated her time and expertise to create a wonderful presentation on kindergarten readiness; and I was delighted to organize a workshop on science activities for families with young children. We got the work done and our conference workshops were each filled to capacity. Thanks go to Patricia Baker for being my very able co-presenter and for demonstrating the “hands-on” activities with audience volunteers. Mom to Madre webmaster and graphic artist, Kim Buckley, did a wonderful job designing the PowerPoint presentations and running the technical part of each workshop.
In February, Mom to Madre has been having a lovely time bringing Valentine’s Day art projects to families, with children and family members of all ages. Over time, we have had the opportunity to see older kids come up with inventive ways to use the art supplies we bring. This past week, two middle school students looked at doilies in an inventive way–as stencils. They placed a doily over a piece of paper or a paper plate. Next, they colored the front of a stencil with various colors of markers, then painted over the entire doily with glitter glue. When the artists peeled off the stencil/doily the results were beautiful!
It’s such a pleasure meeting new families and visiting with families we have known now for several years. We bring books for each of our family parties’ themes. This February, the theme, of course, has been Valentine’s Day. The youngest kids love having the books read out loud in their small “reading circles.” We fell in love with some new books this year. They are included in our photo gallery, below.
On Valentine’s Day, volunteer Julie Cohick, RN, with her nine-month-old son, Gabriel, talked to girls at a high school child development class about the milestones her baby was reaching. The girls made Valentine’s cards and had a special treat of strawberry shortcake. We were so pleased that they all were able to watch Julie’s video on Infant-Mom Bonding at the end of the class.
Since we live in San Diego, spring is literally around the corner. Mom to Madre will be thinking about fun ways to explore shamrocks and leaves for our March parties. Our presentations to families in preschools will also reflect the changing seasons. It’s fun to think about new themes we will be exploring in the coming year. I’m thinking about flowers and plants!
